AURA AURORA
An aurora, a mysterious and awe-inspiring phenomenon for eons, urged humans to gather, reason and search for answers for the unknown, for things which are out of our reach. We take equal inspiration from this natural light display and the primal desire to gather and seek to create a moment of “hygge” or coziness along the luminary walk.
Since pre-Christian times, Germanic families in Scandinavia built wheels with progressively lighted candles each December to symbolize turning “the wheels of the earth” back to the sun and longer days. The suspended ring of light is a modern twist of this ancient tradition of hope, with a stream of continuous flowing light. The outer walls of the installation create a small “sky” of LED light panels that react to the light flowing inside the ring - much as the particles in our sky react to sunspots to create the “aurora borealis” across our northern skies.
This semi-enclosed space under the installation allows viewers to stand closer together and enjoy a shared moment of connection - watching the northern lights dance above and around them as if to keep the darkness and rain at bay.
Aura Aurora was featured at the 2019 SAM Lights at the Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, WA and the 2019 Redmond Lights at Redmond City Hall, Redmond, WA.
